2019 Free Career Seminar Tour: The Testimony

Earning from Skills: Thlama's Story (#LearnASkillChallenge)

Bio : My name is Henrietta Thlama Dabariju. I am Marghi by tribe from Lassa town, Askira/Uba Local Government Area of Borno State. I have a Bachelor’s degree in Botany and studying for a Master of Science in Forest Resource Management.  The gorgeous Henrietta Thlama  Dabariju 💖 How I got started: I started business thirteen years ago selling yards of wrapper. This taught me how to manage money at a tender age. There’s a way you become careful with the money you earn through hard work you know; it’s actually different from the way you spend moneh you got freely. Right from my first year at University, I sewed jackets and tops for sale and also bought handmade shoes from Jos (Plateau State) and sold them here in Maiduguri (Borno State). In 2014, I went to fashion school, learned sewing and have been doing that till date. I am now a fashion entrepreneur, with people working for me. Advice for Youths: I believe as energetic youths (of course we are not lazy lol), we should

Let's Learn a Skill 2018 Challenge (#LearnASkillChallenge)

Learning at least a new skill was one of my personal development goals last year. Things didn't work out as I thought, so I carried the goal on to this year and made sure I budgeted for it (time and money). First things first, What is a Skill? For this post's purposes, the following meaning suffices: "A craft, trade, or job requiring manual dexterity or special training in which a person has competence and experience:   the skill of cabinet making." Dictionary.com App It's amazing when you set your heart to improve yourself, how God brings various opportunities your way for realisation, in ways unimaginable. I cite some examples: #1:  Stoned this dress myself 👆😉, using an iron, a piece of fabric, some water and the dress. How I learned to : A few years ago, I went home for Christmas with an Ankara dress that my tailor recently sewed, and I expressed to my sister and cousin how I'd like a bit more bling on it 😁. My cousin told m

Health Post: Chronic Kidney Disease

About Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD): I didn't know about the existence of CKD until a loved one (who eventually passed on) was diagnosed with it.  As I read about it online, I had a flood of emotions from " oh, if I had known ", to the medical negligence on the part of the medical staff, to the ignorance of the patient etc. When all's said and done, we learn from our mistakes and within the best of our ability, educate others on how not to be casualties too; this is the reason for this post.  Writing this was a struggle though; I opened several tabs trying to put pieces together but it seemed like I wanted to write an academic journal, so I calmed a bit lol. I couldn't get myself to type and sat still, thinking, trying to hold myself for hours. Mustered some courage by God's grace and consulted the disease's  NHS UK and NIH web pages for simpler information, from which the bulk of what follows is referenced from: Some Background The Kid

My Mango Testimony

I chuckled at the thought of writing this post but here we go: 😁 Mangoes - they remind me of my maternal grandparents. One of my granddad's relaxation spot in the village was under a mango tree, whereas my grandma enjoyed eating mangoes, especially the species we call ' bush ' - stringy ones. Sometime last month, I went grocery shopping and as I got some Oranges, I sighted Mangoes and was like, it's Mango season 💃💃. I got some, looking forward to happily devouring them. I couldn't immediately on arrival home though, because I was already late for house fellowship (been at a training all day, had to fix somethings etc). I washed and put them to cool, looking forward to a special eating session with them later. 😉 Went for the house fellowship and as we concluded, some severe wind decided to blow, followed by a heavy downpour. Argh 😤, my Mangoes (like they were going away 🤣). When the rain subsided, my friend and I walked to my pla

Know Your Place

At a certain city I lived in the U.K. some years ago, there existed an apple tree on the way to town near a bridge which yielded abundant fruit every summer, they fell to the ground and many got crushed. Contrast to Nigeria where Apples are largely a luxury fruit. Mangoes, on the other hand, were slightly pricier in U.K. Supermarkets but when in season in Nigeria, they are cheap. Why would the same fruits have price variations (yeah, currency is a factor but that's not the point 😀) and perceptions in two countries? Because their  places  are different!  Apples thrive in the U.K. because the conditions are suitable for their trees, likewise Mangoes in Nigeria. Both can grow in either country however, under very special conditions , but I don't think to an exportable quantity. Ok, this Agric ' lesson ' has a point to it: A meaning of ' place'  that fits into this article's context is: " a proper or appropriate location or position "  Dictio
