Earning from Skills: Thlama's Story (#LearnASkillChallenge)

How I got started:

I started business thirteen years ago selling yards of wrapper. This taught me how to manage money at a tender age. There’s a way you become careful with the money you earn through hard work you know; it’s actually different from the way you spend moneh you got freely. Right from my first year at University, I sewed jackets and tops for sale and also bought handmade shoes from Jos (Plateau State) and sold them here in Maiduguri (Borno State). In 2014, I went to fashion school, learned sewing and have been doing that till date. I am now a fashion entrepreneur, with people working for me.

Advice for Youths:
I believe as energetic youths (of course we are not lazy lol), we should not just go and learn what we have a passion for! Learn as many skills as you can: God created us with the spirit of excellence! Why learn only sewing when you could actually be good in make-up, interior décor, catering, event planning, graphic design, photography to mention a few? I can bake, cook, sew and do make-up. Wake up! The clock is ticking!

It surprises me that some youths devote their time to applying for jobs when they could create and give some. Yes, when you see your mates, family members or even those below you making progress, you also want to progress and I understand that; but who says working for a company is what defines your progress? You can progress by having your own company too!

No job is too small so do not belittle any trade as far as it brings money into your wallet (legitimately of course lol). I have done jobs no one will think I have and made lots of profit from it.

Even if you have or want to learn a popular skill, the fact that it is popular is not an excuse not to learn; please go ahead and learn it. Even if it is not as useful where you are, it could become handy elsewhere.

When I came to finally settle in Maiduguri, I saw a need to expand my business beyond sewing to maximise profit. As I had earlier learned make-up, I started the business here. Although it was never my passion, it currently pays me more than any other business I am into; it has since turned to a passion as it pays me and that makes me happy.

On Business Ideas:

I believe one cannot be short of business ideas; it is good to write them down as they come, so be sure to have something handy all the time to note them. So many people too have ideas but fail in implementation. Have you ever seen that sometimes, you notice another person opening the exact business you thought of?

If you don’t use an idea, someone else would!
We do menswear too, so place your orders :)

Last Words:
Business helps you to be disciplined and self-reliant. The fear of failing shouldn't eat up your dreams. Stop hoping for the job, you already have what it takes to get started!

2019 Free Career Seminar Tour: The Testimony

Hello again 😁 Yesterday, I posted on here about the appeal I made for help last August, with hosting a FREE CAREER SEMINAR in Abuja. Well, I also posted the testimony from the FREE CAREER SEMINAR that ended up being a tour across Abuja, and in Nasarawa and Kaduna States. I literally posted the ensuing on Facebook too on 24th October 2019: When I started getting inspirational signals about hosting a Free Career Seminar in Abuja, I thought it'd be a one-day event where parents & students would attend & started making preparations. Well, Abuja isn't exactly cheap & I didn't have sponsors, just a donation (thanks so much Pat  😘 ).  I went to God about strategy & He led me to employ a similar strategy I've used in Ilorin: hold the seminars at various schools, like a tour. That way, venue is free and logistics are a lot easier to handle.  Sis Faith offered to help out and she was able to secure some schools in Nasarawa (thank you  😘...

On Love and Marriage: Mrs Alabi's Story (#LearnASkillChallenge)

Have you ever had a Church Mummy - an older woman from Church is who very interested in your affairs and progress? If you don't, I pray you get to experience one, a great one for that matter as I am blessed to.  Mrs Alabi is one of my Church Mummies, who looks out for my best interest and never fails to encourage me. I appreciate you Ma , God bless you. See this outfit below? She made and gifted it to me 😀❤️😘 As a certified Church Mummy, you know she constantly asks about my marriage plans 😆. Not in a condescending way though, she does with so much love, care, and compassion, encouraging me to trust God and He'll sort me out. She shares a lot with me about lessons from her life and after one of such chats, I told her I'll blog about her story. I wrote down what I recalled and gave her the draft; she okayed it but declined to have her photo put up lol. I told her I'll go to a photo studio then and take a good shot with the dress she made me, then use it in ...
